Labor Shortage In China

44 million 600 thousand: This is the number of 15 to 24 year old population expected to decrease in the second ten years of twenty-first Century.

China may soon come to an end as a supplier of cheap labour worldwide.

Now, Chinese workers are demanding higher wages, and low-end manufacturers in coastal areas complain about the shortage of labour in recent years.

The above phenomena must be related to the increasing prosperity and more opportunities in China, but the profound pformation of the demographic structure is also indispensable.

According to the World Bank, in China, the number of children born per woman dropped from 3.78 in 1975 to 1.77 in 2000, mainly due to the one-child policy launched at the end of 70s.

Labor shortage

What is more serious is that many rural parents are reluctant to leave their families to work in cities because they want to ensure that they are taken care of at home after their old age.

The United Nations predicts that the number of men in the age of 15-24 will be reduced by 18.5% between 2010 and 2020, and that the number of women in the same age group will be reduced by 23.9%.

Researchers believe that people want sons, the one child policy and the increasing popularity of ultrasound equipment, all of which lead to the above phenomenon.

This makes the phenomenon of the shortage of new workers in manufacturing industries such as garment factories mainly employed by women is even more serious.

Economists note that the younger generation of China is healthier and more vulnerable.

Education level

Higher, and therefore higher productivity.

Economists also find that many state-owned enterprises actually hire far more than they need.

Nevertheless, the 21% decline in the population of these age groups is still a major change.

In the not too distant future, young Chinese workers will also support more elderly people.

The United Nations predicts that by 2035, the proportion of elderly people aged 65 and above will rise to 20% in China from 8.2% in 2010.
