Qiu Yiping, Dean of the Textile Institute of Donghua University and 18 years in the US, strongly conveyed a signal to us that the Textile College of Donghua University should not only train high-quality textile talents, but also train leaders of the future Chinese textile industry to have a voice in the world.


While visiting Donghua University's "textile light" education and teaching achievement award, the Textile College's "reform and practice of training high-quality textile professionals in the context of mass education" has brightened our eyes. Today, the importance of talents is the prerequisite for the development of all walks of life.

Qiu Yiping, the dean of the Textile Academy and vice president Guo Jiansheng, told the industry confidently with the teaching achievements obtained in recent years. The teaching mode of teaching students in accordance with their aptitude has already achieved initial success in cultivating students' comprehensive quality, innovative ability and international vision.


Try elite training mode


Reporter: what principles do we follow in order to train high-quality textile professionals? What are the beneficial explorations we have made?


Qiu Yiping: the textile institute has made great efforts in developing student selection, training programs, curriculum reform, tutorial system, enhancing quality education, strengthening students' practical ability and problem-solving ability. We advocate research oriented learning and problem-based learning methods, and have carried out comprehensive exploration and practice in expanding international perspectives.


The specific process includes: exploring and practicing scientific and reasonable experimental class selection methods; carrying out the reform and construction of the training plan and curriculum system; adopting quasi graduate training; students participating in the research projects of the tutors; giving full play to the role of the second classroom, enriching the training of students' practical ability, scientific research ability and innovative ability; strengthening international exchanges, and cultivating students' foreign language ability and international vision.


Reporter: what teaching problems have been solved in different levels of teaching?


Guo Jiansheng: first of all, teaching students in accordance with their aptitude can mobilize the learning enthusiasm of excellent students to a great extent, and guide outstanding students to develop in the direction of giving full play to their own advantages so as to enable outstanding talents to grow faster and better.


Secondly, the experimental class adopts the elite training mode, and sets up the curriculum system according to the guiding principle of the trinity of general, major and professional (directional) courses, which embodies the principles and characteristics of thick foundation, wide caliber, heavy crossing and depth.

Reporter: how are the students in the experimental class selected? Is there any mobility mechanism?


Guo Jiansheng: We enrolled the first "textile experimental class" in 2008. In the 2008 class "textile experimental class" class selection, the Institute adopted the way of selecting the freshmen in the college entrance examination in the same year according to the enrollment of the major categories, through the mathematics, foreign language test and interview, and chose the best way. After a rigorous written examination and interview selection, 36 people entered the 2008 class experimental class.


According to the summary of the 2008 grade experimental class running for 1 years, we adopted the way of selecting the college entrance examination results in the 2009 and 2010 class "textile experimental class", which was selected according to the first semester's average credit hour points and interview results, so that the students who had excellent quality and adapted to the learning environment in Colleges and universities were selected.


At the same time, the experimental class implemented the "dynamic balance in and out" system.

In the first two academic year, at the end of each school year, other outstanding students of the college can enter the experimental class according to their achievements and after the interview, and students who do not adapt to the experimental teaching mode may also choose to leave freely.

At the end of each school year, the elimination system is implemented according to the specific conditions of the experimental class.


Heavy comprehensive quality training


Reporter: what specific work has this teaching achievement done in the reform and construction of students' training program and curriculum system?


Qiu Yiping: according to the Trinity curriculum system of general, major and professional (directional) courses, we focus on stimulating students' interest in exploring unknown knowledge in the process of training in different levels, and strengthening students' basic abilities in foreign languages, computers, engineering and technology.

At the same time, multidisciplinary advantages are offered to provide students with various academic activities, research subjects, engineering design topics, internship practice and overseas exchange opportunities, so as to cultivate and encourage students to form good habits and consciousness of innovative thinking.


The specific implementation of the training plan includes: increasing elective courses in literature, art and manners, strengthening the training of scientific research methods, increasing the methods of innovative methodology and literature retrieval; in the basic courses, setting up curriculum modules, such as materials, chemistry and electrical and mechanical subjects, except for compulsory courses, students can choose according to their own interests; increase their autonomous learning time, such as "doing middle school", "practicing middle school" and scientific research, cultivate and enhance students' applied knowledge and scientific research ability; strengthen professional foreign languages; increase the professional courses of foreign related institutions taught by foreign teachers, expand the international perspective of students, increase economics and financial management courses, and enable students to have 9 characteristics of economic management.


Reporter: the experimental class has implemented tutorial system since the beginning of the undergraduate course. What achievements has been achieved in this quasi graduate training?


Guo Jiansheng: the tutorial system of the experimental class enables students to get the whole course guidance of the Student Guidance Group during the undergraduate study period.

The four students are equipped with a professor tutor, who is appointed by the college.

4 students are asked to form a team freely and contact their respective mentors.

The tutor combines the students into the research group to guide the students in all directions of course selection, learning contents and research methods.

Students attend regular graduate student group meetings, and teams of four participate in tutorial project research to cultivate scientific research ability and team spirit.


At a weekly seminar, students in the experimental class introduced the progress of their research or topics of interest, and discussed with other students.

Through the training of the seminar, the students of the whole class have produced a strong interest in the study of science and science, and inspired the students to be brave to explore and innovate the academic spirit.


Reporter: for the teaching of different levels, the institute pays special attention to the cultivation of students' foreign language ability. What platforms does the college provide for students to strengthen international exchanges and broaden their international horizons?


Qiu Yiping: we require the students in the experimental class to choose the professional courses offered by bilingual teaching, and to set up professional courses in foreign related institutions, which are taught in English by foreign teachers.

Organize students to take part in lectures from overseas scholars and participate in volunteer activities organized by the international conferences held by the Institute. For example, the students in the experimental class were volunteers of the 2009 International Conference on fiber society, the Third International Conference on textile biotechnology and information society (TBIS 2010), and the 2010 "international biomedical textile materials forum" and "111" annual meeting.


The textile institute has established a number of personnel training projects with the United States, France and other countries and Hongkong, China, such as the North Carolina State University, California State University Davies, Philadelphia University, Cornell University, France Lubei higher Textile College and Hong Kong Polytech University.

By providing students with opportunities for communication and learning, students' foreign language communication ability and international perspective have been significantly strengthened and improved.
